DOWNLOADING AND ACTIVATING INUNDATION GRAPHICS FILES
(PLUG-INS) FOR YOUR AREA...
Note - Hurrevac graphic plug-ins are only
available for those areas which previously had HURREVAC (DOS) versions. If you were not
one of those areas, there are other avenues available for incorporating either a GIS or
raster files of your own into Hurrevac2000...see PDF Inundation Files explanation below.
Print out this page first and follow
instructions carefully!!
STEP 1 - FIND THE FILE YOU NEED
When doing this step, you will be asked for
a name and password...use the confidential name and password you were given previously to
download Hurrevac for Win95/98/NT. Remember, case of the
name and password is important.
Using your internet browser call up the following
URL: http://www.hurrevac.com/private/surgemap.
Once you are in the private/surgemap directory,
using your browser, navigate to (click on) the state directory for your
state...example /sc for South Carolina , /ga for Georgia and so on.
In this directory will be a file called xxMAPS.EXE
, where xx stands for the state two-letter id. (Special case in Florida, there
are several .exe files, one for each section of the state available) In order to activate
the surge map plug-ins in Hurrevac2000, you must download and run this file in a specific
location.
STEP 2 - DOWNLOAD TO A SPECIFIC LOCATION -
To download, right-click on the file name and select Save
File As... or Save Link As...(depending on browser) then MAKE SURE you save it in
your Hurrevac2000 program's subdirectory called \maps.
By default, Hurrevac2000 is installed to
ProgramFiles\Hurrevac2000...so the place to store the files would normally be
ProgramFiles\Hurrevac2000\maps but you may have elected to install
Hurrevac2000 to a different directory.
It MUST be downloaded to the Hurrevac2000
program's \maps subdirectory to work!
STEP 3 - RUN THE FILE TO ACTIVATE
The .exe file you just downloaded must be run in the
Hurrevac2000 program's \maps subdirectory in order to activate the surge map plug-ins.
You can run the xxMAPS.EXE file by double-clicking on it
in Windows Explorer. You may have to close the window that appears when this is done. This
will create several files in the \maps subdirectory.
Or...you can run the file from the Start | Run... menu or
from the DOS command line in the \maps subdirectory.
STEP 4 - CHECK FILES OUT AND DELETE UNNEEDED FILE
Now you may run the Hurrevac2000 program and check that
the files have been activated by using the Utilities | Raster Viewer... menu item.
The Inundation Map files which you downloaded should be there and are accessed by
using the Special Maps button at the bottom of the Raster Viewer Panel.
If there is more than one Inundation graphic file for a
particular county or parish, the Next and Previous buttons at the bottom of the Raster
Viewer panel will become active, and you can page through the panels. Since the
picture is usually bigger than the Raster Viewer panel, you can maximize the viewer by
clicking on the relevant icon at top right of the viewer, or you may use the slider bars
to view different areas of the graphic.
Keep in mind that only counties/parishes that previously
had the old (DOS) Hurrevac Inundation graphics will be there.
If you have Hurrevac2000 installations on other
stand-alone PCs, you will want to copy the xxMAPS.EXE file to the same directory on the
other machines and run it so they will have the specifics too.
After checking this out, you may delete the xxMAPS.EXE
file located in your Hurrevac2000\maps subdirectory. It is no longer needed.
ABOUT THE INUNDATION MAP PLUG-IN FILES....
The files in the \Hurrevac2000\maps subdirectory are
specially named so they can be identified by county and type. Do not rename
these files!!
Alternate Route for Inundation Graphics (PDF
Files) -
Some states (the first are NC and SC) have Inundation
Graphics converted from a GIS system to Adobe Acrobat (tm) PDF format...which makes
them readily viewable with Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free program available at www.adobe.com). Adobe Acrobat has become a standard
for the viewing and exchange of information.
When converted to PDF format, these Inundation
Graphics are fully scalable and zoomable to levels of great detail...just like a GIS
system (vector graphics).
In addition, they can be integrated into Hurrevac2000
through the Utilities | Inundation GIS Viewer by taking the following steps.
1. In File | Program Setup | General Setup |
Misc. panel - enter the path to your Adobe Acrobat Reader in the 2nd
box. Example - usually the file you are looking for is AcroRd32.exe - the path to
this file might be something like
c:\Acrobat\AcroRd32.exe (example..your
path may vary)
2. Next enter a space...followed by the path to the
first .PDF file you wish to view.
c:\Acrobat\AcroRd32.exe d:\atlas.pdf (here the first file is on
drive D: and called atlas.pdf
3. Save the Setup and exit Program Setup.
4. Call up the Inundation Graphics through the
Utilities | Inundation GIS Viewer...
