STORM SURGE INUNDATION GIS POSSIBILITIES AND HOW TO
INCORPORATE INTO Hurrevac2000...
Those areas which previously had Hurrevac (DOS Version)
inundation graphics have the ability to display those files in the Windows version by
installing graphics plug-ins (see Tech Note 2).
For those who did not have such graphics, or who have or
expect to have access to a GIS system, GIS graphics that you or another agency
creates for your area can be shown within Hurrevac for Win95/98/NT.
There are essentially two routes that you can follow to
display true (vector) GIS Inundation graphics in the program:
Full GIS Option -
This option is for those who have a full-blown GIS system
residing on their computer or network, complete with Inundation graphic vector files.
In Hurrevac for Win95/NT... select the menu item
File | Program Setup...| Miscellaneous and enter the path to your GIS
executable in the space provided. Press OK to save.
If your GIS allows it, you may also be able to provide a
command line parameter designating the file you wish to initially view as the program
comes up. It would usually be designated by following the path to the executable
with a space...then the name of the initial file to display (see your GIS manual).
To run the GIS from within the Hurrevac program,
select the Utilities | Inundation GIS Viewer... option.
Disadvantages with the full GIS option are that a full GIS
takes up a lot of system resources for the relatively small amount of graphics to be
viewed. A full GIS is also quite costly. If you don't already have a GIS
system available to you....it is recommended that you just go with the GIS Viewer
option below for displaying vector inundation graphics.
GIS Viewer Option (preferred) -
This option is for those who have access to vector
inundation graphics files (perhaps provided by Army Corps or others) and want to display
them but dont have a resident GIS system on their computer or network.
The ESRI corporation (www.esri.com), which produces
ArcView and ArcInfo GIS products, provides a free GIS viewer called Arc
Explorer, which can be used to view Inundation Graphics in the ESRI shape file
formats. If your provider of inundation graphics vector files has provided the
vector files in another format, you can ask them to export them to one of the ESRI formats
(ArcInfo, ArcView, etc.).
Once Arc Explorer is installed on your computer, do
the following:
In Hurrevac for Win95/NT... select the menu item
File | Program Setup...| Miscellaneous and enter the path to your Arc Explorer
GIS Viewer executable in the space provided. Press OK to save.
If your GIS Viewer allows it, you may also be able to
provide a command line parameter designating the file you wish to initially view as the
program comes up. It would usually be designated by following the path to the
executable with a space...then the name of the initial file to display (see your GIS
manual).
To run the GIS Viewer from within the Hurrevac
program, select the Utilities | Inundation GIS Viewer... option.
Alternate Route for Inundation Graphics (PDF files)
Some states (the first are NC and SC) have Inundation
Graphics converted from a GIS system to Adobe Acrobat (tm) PDF format... which makes them
readily viewable with Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free program available at www.adobe.com) Adobe Acrobat has become a
standard for the viewing and exchange of information.
When converted to PDF format, these Inundation Graphics are
fully scalable and zoomable to levels of great detail....just like a GIS system (vector
graphics)
In addition, they can be integrated into Hurrevac2000
through the Utilities | Inundation GIS Viewer by taking the following steps...
1. In File | Program Setup | Misc panel - enter the
path to your Adobe Acrobat Reader in the 2nd box. Example - usually the file
you are looking for is AcroRd32.exe - the path to this file might be something like
c:\Acrobat\AcroRd32.exe
(example...your path may vary)
2. Next enter a space...followed by the path to the first
.PDF file you wish to view
c:\Acrobat\AcroRd32.exe
d:\atlas.pdf (here the first file is on
the drive D: and called atlas.pdf
3. Save the Setup and exit Program Setup
4. Call up the Inundation Graphics through the menu....
