Advisory Text Archives

Advisory Text archives are located at ftp://ftp.hurrevac2.com/textarch/, but first you should read the following...

The following describes a system of archiving for NHC Advisory Text products. Your Hurrevac Data files (.stm files) are automatically stored in the correct sub-directory (data, epacdata or cpacdata for Atlantic, East Pacific and Central Pacific) and should be kept there for archive purposes.

Setting up a Text Archive system on your computer

An average season of storms can result in from 500 to 1000 NHC Advisory Text files (Public Advisory and Forecast/Advisory readable files).

Not everyone will want to keep these files. But for those who want to keep these text files, the numbers can be overwhelming, if kept in the default active text file folders under your Hurrevac program directory, called \text , \epactext, and \cpactext for Atlantic, East Pacific and Central Pacific.

Our advice is to keep only the active storm Advisory text files in \text, \epactext and \cpactext (the default directories when you download by FTP within the program), and store the rest in the sub-folders under the text folders as suggested below.

Here is our suggestion for setting up an Advisory Text archive system with Hurrevac 2000 - These steps are not hard to accomplish, but if you are uncomfortable performing these steps on your computer, please give the job to a more experienced computer person in your office.

Step 1 - Locate the Advisory Text Folders

Using Windows Explorer, navigate (in the left pane) to the folder called \text, which is located under your Hurrevac program folder. Since the program by default is installed under the \ProgramFiles folder, you may have to click on first ProgramFiles, then the Hurrevac program folder, then the \text folder (for Atlantic), the \epactext folder (for East Pacific) or \cpactext folder (for Central Pacific).

Step 2 - Make Subfolders for Past Years

After clicking on one of the above folders, it should be highlighted and the contents of the folder should be shown in the right pane. Now select File | New Folder from the Windows Explorer menu, and in the right pane, name the folder 1995 ( 1995 was the first year of our text archives).

Repeat this process (create more folders) for all the years up to this year (and into the future if you want). You should now have

ProgramFiles\(HurrevacDirectoryName)\text\1995 ProgramFiles\(HurrevacDirectoryName)\text\1996

...and so on at least up to the current year. Repeat this process for the \epactext directory if you are storing East Pacific archives, and the \cpactext directory if you are storing Central Pacific archives.

Step 3 - Download and Unzip the Archive files

Now that you have your text archives directories set up, you can populate them by taking the following steps...

A. Go to the text archives and download the files you need into the proper directory for their year. Navigate to the correct archive directory (either Atlantic, EastPac, or CentPac. The files will be listed. You download by right-clicking on the file and selecting Save As, Save Link As, (depending on your browser). Then select the proper year's archive directory to send them to (see examples below). The archive files are in a self-unzipping format which unzips when run.

The archive files are named as in the following examples:

A1995MAR.exe is the file for storm A of 1995, the Forecast/Advisory (formerly Marine Advisory, thus the MAR), which includes the Probabilities appended to each file. This file would go into the \(HurrevacDirectoryName)\text\1995 or directory folder on your system, assuming you got it from the Atlantic archives.

B1996PUB.exe is the file for storm B of 1996, the Public Advisory with Discussion bulletin appended to each file. This file would go into the \(HurrevacDirectoryName)\text\1996 directory folder on your system.

B. To unzip these files you must run them (do not use WinZip or any other zip program!). Using Windows Explorer, simply double-click on the file and it will be unzipped into many files. You may have to close the Unzip progress window when it finishes.

C. After running the file to unzip it, delete the .exe file you downloaded. It is no longer needed and will take up space on your system.

Using the Archive System within Hurrevac2000

Using the Advisory Text archive system within Hurrevac is easy....simply select Utilities | NHC Advisory Text Viewer... and select the Forecast/Advisory or Public Advisory button...then click on the folder for the year you are interested in. If you have set up the system as described above, the Year folders should appear in the upper left of the File Box that comes up.
