Hurrevac2010 Version History
Version 1.0.492 - August 31, 2010
Modifies the method under which an HTTP proxy password is saved in the program. Only those users experiencing problems with Hurrevac2010's Internet download of data should upgrade to this version. See Tech Note 5 for further assistance with connectivity issues.
Version 1.0.485 - August 23, 2010
Adds 33 gages in Hawaii to the existing display of River Gages for the continental US. This version also newly supports the VA Risk Profile (Profile requires updated VA and NC HES plugins for activation).
Numerous bug fixes and user-requested enhancements. Most noteably:
- Corrects bug in advisory track labels that underreported maximum sustained winds;
- Handles diminishing winds from landfalling storm like Hurrevac2000. Previous version of Hurrevac2010 does a direct interpolation for max winds and wind extents in between forecast points. When 48hr point is over water and 72hr point is over land, direct interpolation causes wind fields to be tapered too soon. This version will hold the max winds and wind extents until landfall, then taper from there;
- Basemap modifications to add user-requested items such as PR EM zones and Bermuda;
- More user preferences retained (i.e. where Print-to-File items are saved, annotation settings, map views);
- Keyboard shortcuts added for printing, copying, and pasting. Right-click to copy or paste added to various text screens;
- Legend for red-yellow-blue wind categories added to bottom of tracking map when no other legend is needed;
- Corrected bugs in the Manual Data Entry panel that occur when adding or deleting an advisory;
- Advisory overlays now have numbers and colors to make them more distinguishable; and
- GISStatus.txt file, used to populate the Current Tab treeview is now created on the fly by the desktop program. In previous versions there was a slight delay in updating this treeview with the latest advisories because of the need to wait for this file to be downloaded from the server. advisory label placement improved.
Version 1.0.412 - June 9, 2010
This update addresses over two dozen minor issues identified since the first launch of Hurrevac2010. Most notably, it corrects a critical bug in the GIS (shapefile) export utility, streamlines treeview selection/loading of storms on the tracking map, and adds Import/Export STM file options to the UTILITIES menu so that exercise storms can be easily copied into and out of the proper Hurrevac2010 data directories. This version also contains a fix for the 'DefaultSetup_Plugins routine' error message that users began seeing on June 8th.
Version 1.0.321 - March 11, 2010
Corrects a file-loading issue for individuals and agencies whose computer login usernames contain a period or underscore (i.e. firstname.lastname). If you are able to browse and view storms on the Archives tab, this issue does not affect you.
Resyncs predicted tide in the Tide Gage Browser so that there is no longer a sudden jump in the plotting from past to future.
Recolors the observed and forecasted water levels in the River Gage Browser for better contrast and clarity. Also extends the viewing window for River Gage Impact Statements and Crest/Lows so that lengthy text entries are not cut off.
Version 1.0.312 - March 1, 2010
This is the very first full release of Hurrevac2010, a major platform upgrade for the HURREVAC program. Please see the Hurrevac2010 Overview for descriptions of how the new platform differs from Hurrevac2000.

- The 4 AND 5 DAY FORECASTS from the NHC, CPHC and JTWC are supported.
- The OVERLAY OPTIONS in the program were reworked out of necessity as the program became more complex. A new Overlay List Box is included on the Tool Bar...allowing easier selection of both storm and advisory overlays.
- A CLEARANCE TIME BROWSER is included under the Utilities menu. This allows you to click on a county of interest and have the latest Matrix of Official Clearance Times displayed in the browser box.
- Warning Points were updated on East and West coasts of Mexico and West and Northwest coasts of Florida to reflect latest changes.
- Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Watch stripe colors and appearance were changed slightly to reflect comments from users.
- Advisory movement shown for initial position adjusted to reflect advertised Hurricane Center advisory movement rather than first hour forecast ...switching to forecast movement for subsequent hours of forecast.
Version 2.0.20 - June, 2002
- The Evacuation Transportation Info System (ETIS) output for the Southeast US and Gulf states, (introduced late last season) created by PBS&J, has been finalized and integrated into Hurrevac. This is a complex system. The options for the ETIS feature in Hurrevac will be found under the Traffic main menu item (8 options)...which you can learn about with the Help | Contents menu by selecting ETIS as the topic. Currently, only test ETIS data is in the system, since the ETIS model will not normally be run by PBS&J unless there is an exercise or a Category 3 or higher, multi-state evacuation. When the data is available, it will be automatically downloaded to your system with the Auto-download feature, as long as you select ETIS data in your Download Profile.
- Historic Tracks Scan module that allows analysis of storms back to 1851 in the Atlantic and 1949 in the East Pacific. This new item is found under the Display Mode menu and has a related Help topic of its own.
- National Weather Service River Flood Forecast Graphics are now available under the Rain/River menu item. They are for 5 days out and are issued once daily around 5PM Eastern Daylight Time (2100Z). Affected List for counties affected by the graphic is also new in the program.
- An Exercise Wizard has been added (available under Utilities menu) which allows you to easily construct the track and forecasts for a hypothetical hurricane. 5. Expanded Yearly Plot years to select from under Display Mode menu. The years now go back to 1851 in Atlantic and 1949 in East Pacific.
- A Closest Point of Approach list is now available under the Timing menu.
- Improved Pacific items a. Guam NWS islands of responsibility treated similarly to State and Counties elsewhere (timing, other items are now available for them). These islands are grouped under West Pacific in Program Setup | General Setup | Locals panel. Also added to the West Pacific graphic islands displayed. b. Delineation of NHC , CPHC and JTWC areas of responsibility is now displayed on storm map in Pacific. c. A West Pacific text decoder was added for JTWC Warning bulletins (the Advisory Text Decode function under File menu is where you would find this). You would only use this if you cant access the Internet site.
- Bearing and azimuth in degrees has been added to the Coordinates/Measurement Tool.
- Advisory Text Viewer now always brings up advisory text for the storm being viewed, rather than the latest file downloaded. If a file for the current storm is not stored on your PC, then the latest download is shown.
- Your Default Printer upon entry into Hurrevac is restored upon exit from any of the Hurrevac print routines. Previously, the program set your system's default printer but did not restore original default printer, if different.
- The FTP Setup panel (under Program Setup) now allows custom logon scripts for Firewall or Proxy Servers. This should allow many of those with tough firewall or proxy problems to adjust their logon (which was previously hard-coded with 'anonymous@hurrevac.com' for proxy server logon) to accommodate their firewall or proxy server. A disable passive connection option was also added.
- Shelter data options were expanded to include the entry and saving of several additional American Red Cross standard report items.
- Program Help files and the Hurrevac Manual were updated to reflect the above changes.
- Several bugs corrected including......with Decision Arc radius assumptions on certain storms forecast to slow in the out-hours (36-72 hrs),..... multiple copies bug on some printers....., and Range Marks overwriting Info Boxes.
Version 2.0.17 - November 2001
- The Evacuation Transportation Info System (ETIS) output for the Southeast US and Gulf states, created by PBS&J, has been integrated into Hurrevac. This is a complex system and the ETIS Road Network is still evolving.
- The FTP Setup panel (under Program Setup) now allows custom logon scripts for Firewall or Proxy Servers. This should allow many of those with tough firewall or proxy problems to adjust their logon (which was previously hard-coded with 'anonymous @hurrevac.com' for proxy server logon) to accommodate their firewall or proxy server. Example... one server did not like the '@' symbol and wanted a '$' symbol instead, others wanted their users name, etc. A disable passive connection option was also added.
- Shelter data options were expanded to include the entry and saving of several additional American Red Cross standard report items.
- Several bugs were corrected which involved: Decision Arc radius assumptions in the code were adjusted to account for certain situations in which a storm is forecast to slow in the out-hours of the forecast (36-72 hrs)...which resulted in a larger Decision Arc and occasional greater differences between the Arc and the Evacuation Timing box values. The printout of multiple copies bug on some printers was corrected. Bug involving display of Evacuation duration values in the Evacuation Timing box when the Category of storm was adjusted LOWER on the Evacuation Options panel by the user was corrected. This did not affect the resulting evacuation timing values but was only a display error. Bug in which Range Mark displays overlaid the Storm Info boxes was corrected.
Version 2.0.15 - August 2001
- A new option to remove the toolbar was added. Access with Map | Hide Toolbar or toggle on/off with Ctrl-H.
- Several bugs involving the West Pacific were corrected including Yearly Plot and posting of incorrect filenames / storm names on the File menu. These also caused occasional file not found errors upon loading program.
- Bugs involving auto-download. After auto-downloading, if no DATA file chosen to display upon exit, current storm file did not update to reflect new data. It had to be selected to update.
- Special advisories (issued between regular advisories) were not labeled correctly in some cases.
- Special advisories which were issued using the forecast times from the next advisory cycle rather than the standard forecast times were not plotted correctly. These are unusual cases but can happen.
Version 2.0.12 - June 2001
- Auto-Download system option, using a Download Profile you set up, gives you all the current data you need, reports on the status of the tropics, and lets you view or display any downloaded item quickly. The manual FTP panel is preserved for your use when retrieving old products.
- Backup site for FTP at hurrevac2.com, with separate and redundant data feed system to a separate high capacity FTP server.
- Western Pacific west of 180 degrees to Malay Peninsula plotting capability (NOTE: live datafeed on this is delayed pending resolution of Joint Typhoon Warning Center message format changes and programming of decoder for same).
- A TimeLine option, which allows the user to set custom time offsets from various storm landmarks such as 34kt, 50kt, 64kt, eye, and Decision Time. For each offset an action to be taken is specified. Then, when viewing the Wind or Evacuation Timing Detail, the Timeline actions to be taken are interspersed within the display at the proper times.
- Switch storm capability - this feature allows you to quickly change the active storm to another storm plotted as an Overlay. When program loads, in addition to loading the last storm viewed, it loads 2 other most recent storms for the season into the Overlay bin. An icon is provided to quickly switch between those storms. So, if, for instance, there are 3 ongoing storms you can quickly switch back and forth between these.
- New plot labeling options, including labels for historic track plot only, for forecast posits only, or both. Also, label options are saved to disk between sessions.
- Animate entire historic track in addition to usual 72 hr projected track.
- Adobe Acrobat pull-up options in Utilities and Help menu items to allow easy viewing of the Hurrevac2000 manual and any Inundation graphics in .pdf format.
- Range marks from any location at any mileage interval available thru the Pop-Up menu system.
- Display of up to 3 Decision Arcs, and adjust speed of arc.
- Updated Manual and Help System for new items.
Version 2.0.9 - November, 2000
- Multiple Decision-Arcs for counties/parishes.
- Animate Past Track of storm. Currently, animation is only available for the forecast points.
- Manual Data Entry code reworked to allow edit boxes, upon first entry of a number (0-9) to clear...then reflect that number...as most MS Windows edit boxes do.
- Fixed bug where QPF (rainfall) data often would plot erroneously when isopleths of rain reached 130W...they would plot as if at 30W
Version 2.0.7 - September, 2000
- Shelter printout options which include individual county/parish and state-wide status reports in an American Red Cross standard reporting format.
- Version 2.0.6 - August 2000
- A Basics-Only Briefing Display (Display Mode | Basics-Only Briefing Display) requested by NHC and NWS for briefing VIPs and/or public without technical jargon or map clutter, and which provides easy-to-understand legends.
- Expanded Storm Track Labeling to include forecast positions and lines connecting the labels to the position they refer to.
- A Yearly Plot option (Display Mode |Yearly Plot) to show all storms on your computer for a selected year.d. Multiple Custom Text Annotate function. You may annotate up to 30 strings of Text...each with its own size, color and boldface characteristics. Options included to delete only selected text strings while keeping others.
- Corrected error which bombed out Storm Stats Tabular Listing.
- Revised Watch and Warning Lines for better distinction between them when producing Grayscale or B/W printouts for dissemination. Specifics of watch/warning line weight, width and color were specified by NHC and NWS HQ.
- Error in Hawaiian time zone corrected...no HDT but only HST.
- Added county seat names for 1600 counties in the database...seen when you zoom in close. Corrected some mis-labeled or out of place locations.
- Changed code to allow storm Cat assumption in Evacuation Options Settings to be taken below that of the NHC forecast, to allow those on fringes of storm to plan for a weaker scenario. Previously, storm Cat assumptions below that of the max NHC forecast were not allowed.
Version 2.0.0 - June 2000
Hurrevac2000 is an upgrade of the HurWin95 program and includes several new features...but keeps the familiar interface. Some of the new features are:
- Central and Eastern Pacific tracking capability
- Official rainfall forecasts from HPC (Hydro-met Prediction Center)
- GIS Export functions to write wind fields, etc. to GIS compatible files
- Increased Watch/Warning plot options (line or flags) and addition of S. and Central America, the Caribbean and Hawaiian Islands.
- Incremental Average Error Swaths for specific hours of forecast
- Wind fields added to sides and front of average error swaths
- Average Error plot improved to eliminate errors when storm backtracks
- Annotate options greatly expanded ...custom text anywhere on screen.
- Option to notate advisory info beside each advisory on screen.
- Other suggested items such as saving default directory for images and GIS options, among others.
