HPC Rainfall Archives

The HPC (Hydro-Met Prediction Center) coded rainfall file archives are located here....but first you should read the following...

The following describes a system of archiving for HPC Coded Rainfall Data products (.qpf files in Hurrevac). These are separate from your Hurrevac storm files (.stm files) which are automatically stored in the correct sub-directory (data, epacdata or cpacdata for Atlantic, East Pacific and Central Pacific) and should be kept there for archive purposes.

Setting up a Rainfall Data Archive system on your computer

Very few people will want to keep these files...and then only on days that are associated with landfalling hurricanes. For normal use, downloading the LATEST. qpf file and overwriting the file of the same name on your computer suffices.

Note that in the rainfall directory at hurrevac.com, there is always a LATEST.qpf file and a duplicate file with a date on it for archive purposes.

For those who want to keep certain of the old rainfall (.qpf) files, our advice is to keep the LATEST.qpf rainfall files and any dated rainfall files associated with special rain events from the current year in the \rain subdirectory under your \Hurrevac2000 program directory, (the default directory when you download by FTP within the program), and store the rest in the sub-folders under the Hurrevac2000\rain folder as suggested below.

Here is our suggestion for setting up an Rainfall Data archive system with Hurrevac 2000 - These steps are not hard to accomplish, but if you are uncomfortable performing these steps on your computer, please give the job to a more experienced computer person in your office.

Step 1 - Locate the Rain Folder

Using Windows Explorer, navigate (in the left pane) to the folder called \rain, which is located under your Hurrevac2000 program folder. Since the program by default is installed under the \ProgramFiles folder, you may have to click on first ProgramFiles, then the Hurrevac2000 program folder, then the \rain folder.

Step 2- Make Subfolders for Past Years

After clicking on one of the above folders, it should be highlighted and the contents of the folder should be shown in the right pane. Now select File | New Folder from the Windows Explorer menu, and in the right pane, name the folder 2000 ( 2000 was the first year of our rainfall data archives).

Repeat this process (create more folders) for all the years up to this year (and into the future if you want). You should now have

ProgramFiles\(HurrevacDirectoryName)\rain\2000 ProgramFiles\(HurrevacDirectoryName)\rain\2001

...and so on at least up to the current year. You could also name the subdirectories for special events, such as (example) Debby for the rainfall files associated with that storm.

Step 3 - Download and Unzip the Archive files

Now that you have your rainfall archives directories set up, you can populate them by taking the following steps...

A. Go to the rainfall archives and download the files you need into the proper directory for their year. The files will be listed in the archive as for example Jun00qpf.exe for the rainfall data archive files for June 2000.. You download by right-clicking on the file and selecting Save As, Save Link As, (depending on your browser). Then select the proper year's archive directory to send them to (see examples below). The archive files are in a self-unzipping format which unzips when run.

B. To unzip these files you must run them (do not use WinZip or any other zip program!). Using Windows Explorer, simply double-click on the file and it will be unzipped into many files. You may have to close the Unzip progress window when it finishes.

C. After running the file to unzip it, delete the .exe file you downloaded. It is no longer needed and will take up space on your system.

Using the Archive System within Hurrevac2000

Using the Rainfall Data archive system within Hurrevac2000 is easy....simply select Rain | Load OLD Rainfall File.... and click on the folder for the year you are interested in. If you have set up the system as described above, the Year folders should appear in the upper left of the File Box that comes up.
